English education is currently included in the Merdeka Curriculum subject
structure at the primary school level. Due to a shortage of teachers, a rural primary
school has made the class teacher the English teacher. The purpose of this study is
to find out what challenges Non-English teachers face and what strategies are used
to deal with challenges when teaching English with a non-english teachers'
educational background.
This study employed a qualitative research type with a sample of 2
classroom teachers who teach using the Kurikulum Merdeka in a rural primary
school. The instruments used in data collection were semi-structured interviews,
observation and documentation. The data analysis technique used the data analysis
model from Miles & Humberman.
The study found four main challenges as well as strategies undertaken by
teachers namely: English's place in the curriculum, absence of experienced English
teachers, Inadequate facilities for education, and Students' negative attitudes
towards studying English. The fifth aspect, socioeconomic background of students,
was not applicable where this study took place. Through this study, the researcher
suggests that it is necessary to recruit teachers according to their studies so that
learning can be of higher quality.
