Vocabulary is an important element in learning English, but considering the
ability that each student has is different, of course, the ability of students to master
English vocabulary is also certainly different. Behind that, English teachers have
an important role in improving students' abilities. In improving students' abilities,
there are challenges faced by English teachers. This study aims to find out the
perceptions of English teachers regarding the challenges faced in improving
students' ability to master English vocabulary.
This research uses qualitative method with case study research type. This
research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Jelimpo. The subject in this study was
one English teacher. Data collection instruments in this study used interviews,
observation, and documentation. Data analysis used data reduction, data display,
and conclusion drawing and verification.
The results showed that there were three aspects of difficulties faced by
English teachers: Diffucult in selecting vocabulary to be taught, difficult to
present or introduce new words, and difficult to review students' vocabulary.
The researcher suggestion for future researchers is that future researchers
should focus more on the strategies used by teachers to overcome difficulties in
teaching vocabulary. In addition, future researchers can also involve more
participants in the study.
