 <note>Exploring The Speaking Difficulties&#13;
Faced By EFL Learners. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas&#13;
Katolik Santo Agustinus Hippo.&#13;
Effective spoken English is crucial for EFL students in West Kalimantan,&#13;
where English is not the native language. This research aimed to identify the&#13;
barriers faced by final-year EFL students at a private university in West Kalimantan&#13;
in developing their speaking skills and to examine the factors influencing these&#13;
challenges.&#13;
Using an explanatory mixed-methods design, the research collected&#13;
&#13;
quantitative data through a survey questionnaire and qualitative data through semi-&#13;
structured interviews. The sample consisted of 51 students, randomly selected from&#13;
&#13;
a population of 211 students enrolled in speaking classes during the 2020, 2021,&#13;
and 2022 academic years in the English Language Education Department.&#13;
Additionally, data were collected through interviews with 8 selected students based&#13;
on various aspects of speaking difficulties and the highest percentages of&#13;
influencing factors from the survey questionnaire results. The questionnaire data&#13;
was examined using a simple statistical formula, while the interview data provided&#13;
additional qualitative insights to derive meaningful conclusions.&#13;
Adapting Saragih’s theory, the study identified six main difficulties faced&#13;
by students in speaking English: (1) Dealing with anxiety 97.8%, (2) Over-using&#13;
the mother tongue 95.6%, (3) Ordering the right grammatical patterns 91.1%, (4)&#13;
Finding the right lexicon 84.4%, (5) Giving spontaneous responses 77.8%, and (6)&#13;
Expressing ideas 71.1%.&#13;
Additionally, a lack of ideas emerged as a major factor affecting speaking&#13;
skills for 97.8% of students, grammar knowledge, preparation, and fluency 95.6%,&#13;
confidence and vocabulary issues 93.3%, language focus 82.2%, mood 73.3%,&#13;
concerns about friends' responses 66.7%, and pronunciation knowledge 64.4%.&#13;
Addressing these barriers through targeted pedagogical strategies could&#13;
substantially improve students' speaking proficiency and enhance their readiness&#13;
for effective global communication.</note>
