<note>Although English Education Study Program students should have an
advantage in debate events such as (NUDC) because all aspects of the debate use
English, in reality, they still face various difficulties in critical thinking. This raises
the question of why; despite having good language skills, these students still
struggle to apply critical thinking skills during the competition. The purpose of this
study is to investigate the difficulties that English education students at Universitas
Katolik Santo Agustinus Hippo face in developing and applying critical thinking
skills during students' participation in NUDC.
This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach,
which is research based on subjective or phenomenological experiences
experienced by individuals. The sample consisted of 4 students; the subjects of this
study were students who participated in the NUDC competition. Data collection
techniques using semi-structured interviews and documentation. For data analysis
techniques using data collection through sources that include interviews, checking
informants to ensure the truth value of data, and checking interpretations and
conclusions. As for data validity, this research uses Data Validity as a data source.
Research Results Adopting Dwyer's 2023 theory, this study identified four
main aspects where students face difficulties and strategies in critical thinking:
Inadequate Skills and Dispositions, Epistemological (Mis)Understanding, Intuitive
Judgement, and Biases and Emotions. To overcome these problems, students use
targeted strategies such as Problem-solving. This research contributes to the
understanding of the specific difficulties faced by English education students in
applying critical thinking in the context of NUDC, specifically through the lens of
Dwyer's 2023 framework. The findings from this study reveal that although English
education students possess strong language abilities and debating skills, they face
considerable challenges in effectively applying critical thinking during the NUDC
competition. This research underscores the importance of consistent practice,
source validation, balancing intuition with analysis, and managing emotional biases
to improve critical thinking ability in a competitive environment.</note>
