This study is based on the interest to learn find out the usage of the
English idiomatic expressions in a movie entitled Bohemian Rhapsody by Bryan
Singer. The dominant context to discuss here is according to the form and
meaning. The objective of the research is (1) to find out the form categories
idiomatic expressions found in Bohemian Rhapsody movie subtitle, and (2) to find
out the meaning of idiomatic expressions found in Bohemian Rhapsody movie
subtitle.
The method used to conduct this research is descriptive qualitative
approach. The instrument used to collect the data in this research is the dialog
used in Bohemian Rhapsody movie subtitle. This research is about to deliver the
form and meaning of the idioms from the movie by using the idioms
categorization mentioned in Adelnia and Dastjerdi’s theory. The research design
phases consist of watching, identifying, clustering, analyzing the meaning, and
findings frequency of the idioms found in the movie.
As the findings of the study, in categorizing form of idiomatic
expression found in Bohemian Rhapsody movie dialog or subtitle, there are 94
idioms that categorized into 5 types of idiomatic expressions found in the movie
which is in accordance with Adelnia and Dastjerdi’s theory. Also, in identifying
the meaning of idiomatic expressions found in Bohemian Rhapsody movie dialog
or subtitle, from the total number of 94 idioms, there are 26 colloquialisms
(27,7%), 8 proverbs (8,5%), 35 slangs (37,2%), 10 allusions (10,64%), and 15
phrasal verbs (15,96%). The idiom category of slang is the most frequently used,
then followed by colloquialism, phrasal verb, proverb, and allusion.
The conclusions of this research then can be used as an additional
reference or comparison for further research, also to encourage another researcher
to provide a significant conclusion related with the topic with another point of
view.
